Early Anomaly Scan
The Early Anomaly Scan, sometimes referred to as a reassurance scan, is carried out between 14 and 19 weeks of pregnancy. It provides an early look at your baby’s development and helps detect major physical differences before the routine anomaly scan at 20–24 weeks.
When can I have the early anomaly scan?
This scan is available between 14 and 19 weeks. It offers an earlier opportunity to assess your baby’s anatomy and highlight any significant concerns, though a follow-up anomaly scan at 20–24 weeks will still be recommended for a more detailed review.
What does the early anomaly scan check for?
During the scan, the following areas are examined:
-
Brain and face: Checking for early structural differences.
-
Spine and limbs: Assessing growth, alignment, and development.
-
Heart and chest: Evaluating cardiac structure and rhythm.
-
Abdominal organs: Reviewing the stomach, kidneys, and bladder.
-
Placenta and amniotic fluid: Ensuring correct position and healthy fluid levels.
From 15 weeks onwards, it is usually possible to determine your baby’s sex via ultrasound. Alternatively, Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) can provide this information earlier, while also screening for certain chromosomal conditions.
If an abnormality is identified, its significance will be explained, and further counselling with a consultant will be offered.
How is the early anomaly scan performed?
The scan is usually performed transabdominally by moving the ultrasound probe gently across your abdomen. In some cases, a transvaginal scan may be recommended to obtain clearer images. Both are safe and effective ways of assessing your baby’s development.
Why should I consider the early anomaly scan?
This scan can be especially valuable if:
-
You have a family history of congenital conditions.
-
Previous scans have suggested possible concerns.
-
You would like early reassurance about your baby’s well-being before the 20-week scan.
