Wellbeing Scan
The fetal wellbeing scan (also known as a growth scan) is an important ultrasound that checks your baby’s health and development in the later stages of pregnancy. It provides reassurance for expectant parents and essential clinical information for your healthcare team.
Using advanced ultrasound imaging, this scan looks at your baby’s growth, movements, amniotic fluid, and blood flow to ensure they are developing as expected.
When can I have the wellbeing scan?
The wellbeing scan is usually performed at around 32 weeks of pregnancy but can be carried out anytime between 26 weeks and full term.
If your doctor recommends closer monitoring, you may be advised to have more than one wellbeing scan during this stage of pregnancy.
Why should I have a wellbeing scan?
This scan is especially valuable in the third trimester as it helps to:
-
Confirm that your baby is growing at a healthy rate
-
Detect signs of complications such as reduced growth, low fluid levels, or placental problems
-
Check the baby’s position, which is important for planning delivery
-
Provide reassurance for you and your family during the final stage of pregnancy
What does the wellbeing scan check for?
During this detailed scan, we assess:
-
Baby’s growth and estimated weight
-
Organ development in the later stages of pregnancy
-
Amniotic fluid levels (too little or too much may require further monitoring)
-
Fetal movements and activity
-
Placenta – its position and function
-
Blood flow (Doppler scan) in the umbilical cord and other vessels, to ensure your baby is receiving enough oxygen and nutrients
If anything unusual is detected, your doctor will discuss the findings with you and recommend further scans, investigations, or follow-up care.
What happens after the wellbeing scan?
-
If all looks normal, you can continue with routine care.
-
If additional monitoring is advised, repeat wellbeing scans may be scheduled every 2–4 weeks depending on your doctor’s recommendation.
