Cardiac Scan

The fetal cardiac scan (also called a fetal echocardiogram) is a specialised ultrasound that looks closely at your baby’s heart. It provides a detailed assessment of both the structure and function of the heart, giving important information about how it is developing during pregnancy.

This scan is usually performed between 18 and 23 weeks, though it can be done earlier or later if needed.

Why might I need a cardiac scan?

A fetal cardiac scan may be recommended if:

  • The nuchal translucency measurement was raised, or a heart concern was noted on a previous scan (nuchal, early anomaly, or routine anomaly).

  • There is a family history of congenital heart disease.

  • You have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, lupus, or treated epilepsy.

  • Your baby was conceived through IVF, especially ICSI.

  • A chromosomal condition (such as trisomy 21, 18, or 13) is suspected or has been confirmed.

  • You are carrying twins or a multiple pregnancy.

In some cases, the scan may be offered even without specific risk factors, simply for reassurance.

When is the cardiac scan performed?

Cardiac scans are usually carried out from 16 weeks onwards, but can sometimes be done as early as 13 weeks if necessary.

How is the cardiac scan performed?

The scan is performed transabdominally, using a high-resolution ultrasound probe over your tummy. It is completely safe and non-invasive for both you and your baby.

During the scan, the specialist will examine:

  • The size, shape, and position of the heart

  • The four chambers, valves, and major blood vessels

  • The rhythm and function of the heartbeat

  • Blood flow in and out of the heart using Doppler imaging

Appointments usually last 45 minutes to 1 hour. Our specialists take time to explain what they see during the scan, with detailed counselling provided if any concerns are found.

Who performs the scan?

At our centre, cardiac scans are performed by highly experienced fetal cardiology specialists with advanced training in detecting even subtle heart conditions. This ensures you receive the most accurate and expert assessment possible.
