Viability Scan

A viability scan is usually the very first ultrasound in pregnancy, carried out between 7 and 10 weeks. It is sometimes called a dating scan because it helps confirm how far along the pregnancy is. This early check provides important information about the baby’s development and overall progress of the pregnancy.

What is the aim of the viability scan?

A viability (or dating) scan helps to:

  • Confirm that the pregnancy is in the uterus (not ectopic).

  • Check for the baby’s heartbeat and early development.

  • Identify whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy.

  • Estimate gestational age and give an accurate due date (EDD).

  • Detect any visible early abnormalities.

  • Assess for internal bleeding, hematomas, or early complications.

How is the scan performed?

  • Transabdominal scan – performed through the tummy.

  • Transvaginal scan – sometimes recommended in very early pregnancy or when clearer images are needed.

Both are safe and provide valuable information for assessing early pregnancy.

Can you have a viability scan at 6 weeks?

Yes, a scan can be done as early as 6 weeks. However, at this stage the baby and heartbeat may still be too small to see clearly. In such cases, a repeat scan 1–2 weeks later is usually advised for more definite results.

Early scans at 6 weeks are often recommended for women with:

  • A history of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy

  • Fertility treatment

  • Symptoms such as pain or bleeding

Should you consider a private viability scan?

Many expectant parents choose a private scan because it offers:

  • Early reassurance about the pregnancy

  • Flexible appointments and minimal waiting times

  • A personalised and unhurried consultation

  • Access to advanced scanning equipment and experienced specialists

This can be especially helpful if you’ve had difficulties in previous pregnancies or simply want reassurance sooner than the routine NHS scan.

Who may benefit from a viability scan?

A viability scan is particularly useful for:

  • Women experiencing bleeding, pain, or concerning symptoms

  • Those with a history of pregnancy loss or ectopic pregnancy

  • Women who have undergone IVF or fertility treatment

  • Parents seeking reassurance in the early stages

What happens after the scan?

After your appointment, the doctor or sonographer will explain the findings.

  • If everything looks normal, you will be guided towards the next routine scan (usually the nuchal scan at 11–13 weeks).

  • If any concerns are identified, you will be advised on further tests, follow-up scans, or treatment as needed.
